Usually know for his extremely strong singing voice John Cowan’s bass playing has been influential and important as well. His sixteen years as bassist and vocalist with New Grass Revival helped take the influence of bluegrass into a new form of music. Later this style developed its own name, Newgrass. Although the New Grass Revival at the time got some flack from bluegrass traditionalists early on, including Bill Monroe according to rumor, they introduced bluegrass to a completely new audience who wanted to discover for themselves the origins this new sound.
This is the first oil painting in the Hands of Music series. That big yellow bass was just calling out to be painted instead of drawn and I wanted to have a bit of a break from the attention detail I have in my drawings. Hopefully there will be many more paintings and drawings to come.
